Advanced Organic Water Testing for Reef Aquariums
While ICP testing provides critical insight into elemental chemistry, it does not tell the whole story.
Many reef systems experience ongoing issues despite strong ICP results, including coral colour loss, nuisance algae, cyanobacteria, bacterial instability or inconsistent nutrient behaviour. In these cases, the cause may lie within the organic chemistry of the aquarium.
The TRITON N-DOC Test is designed to measure the biological and carbon-based components of reef water that conventional testing and ICP analysis cannot detect.
Using specialised laboratory equipment, N-DOC measures three key parameters that influence microbial activity, nutrient balance and overall system stability.
What N-DOC Measures
TIC – Total Inorganic Carbon
TIC measures dissolved carbonate, bicarbonate and CO₂ within the aquarium, providing insight into what is often referred to as true alkalinity. This can help identify differences between standard alkalinity readings and actual carbonate availability within the system.
TOC – Total Organic Carbon
TOC measures the total dissolved organic load in the aquarium, including coral foods, waste, amino acids and carbon dosing products.
Elevated organic carbon may contribute to:
- Bacterial imbalance
- Cyanobacteria and nuisance algae
- Reduced water clarity
- Increased biological stress
For aquariums with heavier feeding or carbon dosing programs, TOC can provide particularly valuable information.
TNb – Total Nitrogen Bound
Unlike traditional nitrate testing, TNb measures the complete nitrogen load within the system, including:
- Ammonium
- Nitrite
- Nitrate
- Amino acids
- Organic nitrogen compounds
This broader measurement offers a more comprehensive understanding of nutrient dynamics and nitrogen processing.
When to Consider N-DOC Testing
N-DOC is particularly valuable when:
- ICP results appear normal but problems persist
- Coral colour or growth begins to decline
- Cyanobacteria, algae or bacterial issues recur
- Carbon dosing is being used
- Feeding levels are high
- Nutrients behave inconsistently
- Establishing a baseline for a new or inherited system
For many reef keepers, N-DOC provides the missing information needed to understand issues that elemental testing alone cannot explain.
Simple Testing Process
The N-DOC workflow follows the same process as a standard TRITON ICP analysis:
- Collect your water sample
- Register the barcode online
- Send the sample to the TRITON laboratory (GERMANY)
- Receive your results and recommendations online
N-DOC is available as a standalone test or can be performed alongside ICP analysis for a more complete assessment of both organic and inorganic water chemistry.
Reef Tek Result Review & Consultation Support
Water analysis reports contain a significant amount of information, and understanding how to apply that data to an individual system can be challenging.
Reef Tek offers optional phone consultations to assist with reviewing and interpreting both ICP and N-DOC results. These consultations are designed to help identify potential issues, explain recommendations and provide practical guidance based on your aquarium and goals.
Phone consultations are available here
For reef keepers seeking a deeper understanding of nutrient dynamics and biological stability, TRITON N-DOC provides valuable insight beyond conventional testing.
