Trachyphyllia, commonly known as the Open Brain Coral, is a beautiful LPS coral prized for its vibrant colours, fleshy appearance, and impressive inflation. Hardy and rewarding to keep, it thrives in mature, stable reef aquariums and makes an eye-catching centrepiece on the sand bed.
For best results, place your Trachyphyllia directly on a sandy substrate under low to moderate lighting (50–120 PAR) with gentle, indirect water flow that allows the tissue to move naturally. Feed 1–2 times per week with meaty foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, or quality coral pellets to promote healthy growth, vibrant colouration, and full tissue expansion. Leave at least 10 cm of space around your Trachyphyllia, as it can extend powerful sweeper tentacles that may sting neighbouring corals. Maintain stable water parameters with a temperature of 23–26°C, salinity of 1.023–1.026, alkalinity of 8–9 dKH, calcium between 420–450 ppm, magnesium between 1300–1400 ppm, and low but measurable nutrients for long-term success.
